The hidden costs of DIY Wedding signs

"We'll just DIY the signage."

It's a sentence that often sounds far simpler at the start of wedding planning than it feels a few weeks before the wedding itself.

And don't get me wrong, DIY can work beautifully. Some of the most personal and meaningful details often come from couples creating parts of the day themselves. If you're creative, enjoy making things and have the time available, it can be an incredibly rewarding part of the planning process.

But what's often underestimated is everything happening behind the scenes.

  1. The testing.

  2. The re-printing.

  3. Those material orders that don't quite work.

  4. YouTube tutorials.

  5. Those last minute trips to buy supplies.

  6. Transporting everything safely - even I get worried when I unwrap those perfectly finished pieces on site, and hope they're still perfect!

Finding time to set it all up on the morning of the wedding, or roping in friends and family to help.

What starts as a way to save money can sometimes end up costing far more in time, pressure and last minute stress than expected.

It's Not Always About Saving Money

When couples compare DIY signage to professionally made signage, the conversation often centres around budget. But the real difference isn't always the cost of the finished sign.

It's the hours spent designing, sourcing, and creating. It's the responsibility of remembering every piece, transporting it to the venue and making sure it's displayed exactly as planned.

For some couples, that's all part of the fun. For others, it's one more task added to an already very long wedding planning list.

Thinking Beyond The Wedding Day

Something else that's worth considering is what happens to your signage once the celebrations are over.

At Harper Rose, sustainability is an important part of how I work. Wherever possible, signs are designed and created with repurposing in mind. After they've fulfilled their role at one wedding, many can be refreshed, redesigned or completely transformed for another celebration.

When creating DIY signage, it's worth considering this too. Can the materials be reused? Is there another purpose for the sign after the wedding? Thinking about its lifespan from the start can help reduce waste and make the most of the materials you've invested in.

I cannot begin to tell you how many couples I meet after their wedding and say “oh we just threw it away” or “Facebook marketplace was great, but extra hassle we didn’t need”.

Choosing What's Right For You

Look it doesn’t mean you can’t DIY your own wedding stationery and styling, as I said, if you’re creative and enjoy making things, people love to do it for the most special day of their lives. There's absolutely nothing wrong with DIY, and there are plenty of situations where it's the perfect choice.

But there is also a large population of people who would rather leave it up to the professionals, make everything a little less stressful towards your day. Not because they can't do it themselves, but because they don't want to spend the weeks before their wedding worrying about unfinished signs, missing materials or whether everything will come together on the day.

The right choice is the one that works for you, your budget and the wedding planning experience you want to have.
